The purpose of this article is to analyze crime discourses broadcasted in television news texts and its relation with the perception of “disproportion” that many Costa Ricans have on this subject. To do so, we use several concepts from the field of linguistics such discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis, as well as social and psychological theories. The results show that the characteristics of television news discourses -as well as discourses elaborated by other sources-can cause fear among the population, and, consequently, play an important role in creating a feeling of insecurity.
