Resumen
COLL, Magdalena y FUSTES, Juan Manuel. Luigi Bona’s I racconti dell’ombú: a lexicographical reading of a singular work. Logos [online]. 2016, vol.26, n.2, pp.229-240. ISSN 0716-7520.
In 1960 the Italian immigrant Luigi Bona published I racconti dell´ombú in Montevideo, a collection of three stories that describe the Uruguayan rural milieu. This original narrative work is characterized by the author’s intention to explain to the Italian reader some linguistic features of the regional Spanish. In doing so, Bona uses different lexicographical resources which constitute the main purpose of analysis of this article. Two devices are found and described by means of a lexicographical methodology. On the one hand, the introduction of lexicographical content in the narrative itself. On the other, the attachment -at the end of the book- of a vocabulary list of regional words of Spanish or Indigenous origin. The analysis of the 75 words collected in this attachment indicates that they are strongly related to the local and rural environment, something that is clearly explained by the topic of the stories. It also indicates that they are defined through literal translations, when possible, or by encyclopedic explanations containing geographic, historical and economic details. Bona supports his definitions by drawing on the work of other authors who become “authorities” in the lexicographical tradition. Bona also provides information about the origin of certain words. Thus, the Italian immigrant becomes an amateur lexicographer of regional Spanish by creating a bilingual lexicographic work of a peculiar nature.
