BASUALDO, Lourdes. “World Friendly Argentina”. Medical Tourism and Provision of Health Mobility. Si Somos Americanos [online]. 2020, vol.20, n.2, pp.67-90. ISSN 0719-0948. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0719-09482020000200067.
This article analyses institutional policies and practices aimed at promoting the emerging segment of "medical tourism" in Argentina and travel to the country for that purpose. The author proposes that Argentina sought to promote itself as “globally friendly” to convey the image of a country without borders and restrictions for anyone who wanted to travel for health reasons. The construction of the "medical tourist" as a subject that requires differentiated attention led, among other measures, to the implementation of visa exemption policies and differential mobility circuits. The methodology employed is qualitative and draws on observations and testimonies from an international conference on "medical tourism" held in Argentina. The author also used interviews with tourism sector agents, owners and/or representatives of private health institutions, and members of public-private organizations that form part of the industry of "medical tourism" in the local and national space, as well as documentary sources such as tourism plans and programs, national regulatory frameworks related to migrations, and agreements for the promotion of "medical tourism."
