Resumen

ESPINOZA, Victoria  y  ROSAS, Ricardo. Initial differences in development of access to written language according to socioeconomic status. Perspect. educ. [online]. 2019, vol.58, n.3, pp.23-45. ISSN 0718-9729.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4151/07189729-vol.58-iss.3-art.955.

This study aimed to analyze the initial state of reading precursors of children from different SES. We assessed 81 children from low SES and 76 children from high SES in five skills considered as precursors of reading. Significant differences, favorable to high SES children, were observed for all the precursors. However, there are some distinctions between the magnitude of these differences. The greatest gap was found in vocabulary, oral comprehension, and speed of naming, abilities related to reading comprehension, and the smallest gap was observed in phonological awareness and letter knowledge, precursors related to decoding. These results reveal the need to implement remedial didactic strategies, which consider the development profile of children, to support the development of compensatory learning trajectories in children from low SES environments.
