Abstract

The Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Concepción has presented its Chemical Engineering Program for an ABET accreditation. The accreditation process requires adjusting the teaching process to new forms of assessment, control and evaluation. Within the strategy adopted by the Department, teaching improvement activities were carried out and, to establish the process of continuous improvement, work-stages were established as follows: (1) folders for each course were created with their syllabus, assessment instruments, evaluations and exam solutions; (2) workshops to define the learning outcomes (LOs) of every course of the program; (3) spreadsheets for each course with percentage of achievement of LOs; (4) definition of key performance indicators and their relationship with each LOs; (5) rubrics as an evaluation method; and (6) work of a Continuous Improvement Commission. The accreditation process means the installment of a procedure for continuous improvement in teaching, collecting key evidences about the type of teaching, and incorporating into the improvement plans the perception of graduates and employers, which finally allows education according to the needs of industry and society.
