This is historical study that reconstructs the path of the first two programs offered in distance education modality (Bachelor of Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing) at the Autonomous University of Querétaro, Mexico. The analysis was carried out through a constructivist approach with phenomenological-hermeneutic techniques (documentary analysis and narrative interviews) to answer: when and why did distance education emerge? and what situations led to the design of these programs? We identified five stages that mark the history of nursing in this institution and four categories that group the experiences lived by the participants (educational innovation, workload, professional orientation and technology). The results contribute to the understanding of the history of the institution, reveal current struggles that hinder the development of long-distance education, and provide elements of interest for the bodies responsible for incorporating blended and virtual modalities in the UAQ. Despite being a case study, the findings may broaden the debate on the subject, and the results can be compared with those derived from similar studies, all of which deepens the knowledge about long-distance education in the field of nursing.
