CABEZAS, Carlos  e  MENDOZA, Marvin R. Emerging Manifestations of Variational Thinking in Beginning Calculus Students. Form. Univ. [online]. 2016, vol.9, n.6, pp.13-26. ISSN 0718-5006.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-50062016000600003.

In this study, the results obtained through the didactic analysis of student productions regarding the concept of variational thinking, using an onto-semiotic approach of mathematic instruction and knowledge. The research sought as objectives the characterization and categorization of productions identifying their characteristics, to discover the various manifestations of variational thinking. The research was conducted within a regular calculus course of freshmen engineering students at the Catholic University of the Maule Region in Chile. The written productions of the students in an initial test were analyzed. This was done by generating categories of manifestations of variational thinking according to a first level of analysis, provided by the onto-semiotic approach. The results of this research showed that most of the students made use of certain aspects of variational thinking.

Palavras-chave : variational thought; training analysis; onto-semiotic approach; student productions.
