The development and implementation of a low cost virtual laboratory, suitable for team work, on the subject of Earth and Universe within a Physics course is presented. The laboratory is designed by university students of physics that will be the future teachers in high schools in Chile. The work is inserted in the broad concept of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and was developed and tested in a course of a local high school. The development of the virtual laboratory includes the use of educational software, simulations and animations. This virtual laboratory allows students to gain skills associated with independent learning, in a learning environment characterized by team work. The design of virtual laboratories as reported in this paper shows to be relevant for the formation of science teachers and for the better transmission of physics concepts to high school students.
