A low cost mobile robot was designed to be used in laboratory courses of the area of Automatic Control, and Electronic for Mechanical Engineering students. The construction of the mobile robot is done integrating four basic systems: a platform driven by direct-current motors, an ultrasonic sonar, a global positioning system GPS, and a control system based on PC using the software LabView ®. Practical tests were done to evaluate the performance of the ultrasonic sonar and of the GPS. Laboratory  experiments in an indoor environment  were designed to test navigation algorithms under diverse situations, to determine their potentials and limitations. A laboratory protocol and log sheet to be used in the Lab report to be prepared by the students, are proposed. The mobile robot allows students to apply available navigation algorithms and to develop new algorithms using Labview.
