The main difference between civil law and common law is precedent, which is compulsory and imposes itself to the judges as a rule of law. That means that the judges, in Anglo-saxon countries, are bound to decide upon the cases they hear according to what was decided upon earlier in similar cases either by higher courts (vertcal stare decisis) or by judges of the same jurisdiction, including themselves (horizontal stare decisis)
