GONZALEZ RUIZ, Andrés et al. Critical period of weed competition in Allium fistulosum L. in the Valley of Mexicali, Baja California. Idesia [online]. 2020, vol.38, n.2, pp.13-19. ISSN 0718-3429.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-34292020000200013.

The weed in the cultivation of green onion (Allium fistulosum L.) is a critical factor in its growth and production. Therefore efficient strategies are required for its management in this crop. An experiment was conducted under field conditions to determine the critical period of weed competition in A. fistulosum. The experiment consisted in periods of time with the weed-free cultivation and weed in competition, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 days after planting (DAP) and two controls, the culture weed free and the culture weedy. The study variables were weed density, pseudostem diameter, plant height and yield. The critical period of weed competition was estimated by nonlinear regression analysis. The weed species, Chenopodium murale (17.5 Plants m -2 ) and Amaranthus albus (5.5 Plants m -2 ) were presented in high density during the experiment. Plant height and pseudostem diameter decreased to 110 DDS in treatments L10E and ETC. Weed competition decreased the total yield, yield of thin green onions and yield of medium green onions by 96.21, 95.5 and 97.05% respectively. The period of weed competition in A. fistulosum is between 12 and 90 DDS. After this period, it would not be advisable to apply weed control.
