The insecticidal effect of Peumus boldus M. powder was evaluated at three different concentrations (0, 5%, 1%, 2%) for the control of Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky on eigth wheat cultivars under laboratory conditions. The parameters evaluated were: preference, repellent effect, mortality and emergence of adult insects, grain weigth loss and germination. A completely random design with a factorial arrangment of 3x8 was used. Regarding insect preference Huañil and Ciko cultivars showed significant differences among them. The highest percentage of preference was obtained by cv. Huañil cultivar (18%), while cv. Ciko cultivar got the lowest percentage (3.8%). The other treatments did not show significant differences. Mortality registered 80% in every treatment, reaching 100% when 1% and 2% (w/w) of powder were used. These treatments also provided a low emergence of insects, obtaining 0% of emergence with 2% (w/w) of the powder. Grain weight loss was lower than 0.27g in all cultivars and concentrations, and grain germination was affected by all concentrations of powder. Finally, the powder of P. boldus was repellent to S. zemais in all evaluated concentrations.
