Seedling growth was determined from three seed sizes of two corn cultivars evaluated under three drought conditions, in which water tensions were simulated in sand using three osmoticant solutions created with sucrose, these tensions represented the water retention in the soil (0.0, -0.6 and -1.2 MPa) as a consequence of three irrigation frequencies (24, 48 y 72 h) previously studied. Sowing was carried out in aluminum trays using 10 kg of soil/tray and 50 seeds. A split-split-plot design was used with four replications, main plots were constituted for the osmotic potentials (0.0, -0.6 and -1.2 MPa), sub-plots were the two corn cultivars (Himeca 95 and Pioneer 3031) and sub-sub-plots were three seed sizes (< 0,32 g; 0,32 - 0,36 g, y > 0,36 g). The following evaluations were recorded: seedling height, radicle length, radicle volume, dry and fresh weight of shoot and radicle, seedling height: radicle length ratio and dry shoot weight:dry radicle weight ratio. An analysis of variance and Duncan’s multiple range test were carried out. The inference level was 5%. It was possible to discriminate for drought tolerance in seedling stage among cultivars with osmotic potentials of -1.2 MPa created with sucrose (cultivar Himeca 95 was more tolerant than Pioneer 3031). Seed size did not affect the seedling growth under stress conditions, however, seedlings from intermediate and larger seeds were more vigorous than from smaller ones at 0 MPa.
