Welding is one of the techniques used for joining structural elements, and has many benefits in its application. However, it is usual to find some flaws in the welding elements due to temperature regimes at the time of its deposition, stresses that are generated by contraction in cooling and the appearance of inclusions, porosity and solidification cracking among others. This review article explains the issues related to the stress analysis, defect detection and the influence the geometry of a weld joint. Also, the life management protocols in welds, that involve factors such as load, material resistance, size of the defects and the assumed positions of the statistical variations under real circumstances, which are useful to estimate the life of the welded joints, are included. The results of research work related to the analysis of different loading conditions and types of welded joints are included.
