The aim of this paper is to clarify the manner in which the narrator Oscar Bustamante thematizes and discusses the identitary constitution of rural subjects in Maule, on literary discourse, represented in two of his stories -"Mineral del Chivato" y "Last Journey"-. The representation of rural society made in the Bustamante's Works shows an spontaneous questioning of identity. The articulation of narrative world, motives and characters adress this issue in a special way. Selected Works rewrite the modernization process and the factors that triggered the different changes in the context and identity of rural subject of central Chile, during the fi rst half of the twentieth century, a process that operates as a reference in the studied works.
