Resumen
BELARDI, JUAN BAUTISTA; CARBALLO MARINA, FLAVIA y L’HEUREUX, GABRIELA LORENA. New archaeological results in Cabo Vírgenes (Santa Cruz, Argentina): Cabo Vírgenes 20 site. Magallania [online]. 2011, vol.39, n.2, pp.279-292. ISSN 0718-2244. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-22442011000200019.
In Cabo Virgenes, due to the anthropic denudation of an erotional beach close to the Atlantic Ocean two archaeological concentrations were exposed. They were named as Cabo Vírgenes 20 site (CV20). Of all the studied sites in the area CV20 has the highest faunal remains density and high richness of exploited species. Analysis of the bone assemblage shows emphasis on exploitation of seabirds (Phalacrocorax sp.; Aptenodytes patagonica), in addition to an important presence of South American sea lions (Arctocephalus australis y Otaria favescens) and carnivores (Pseudalopex culpaeus) with indications of anthropic use. Lithic artifacts show the mainly use of available raw material and the same tools types already registered in the locality. The evidence suggests an important expeditive component within the lithic technology. In the regional framework CV20 provides new evidence about the use of coastal resources and carnivores at around 1.200-700 years BP. However, the archaeological record follows the known trends, strengthening the sporadic and marginal use of this place by hunter-gatherer inland populations during the Late Holocene.
