Abstract

In this work, we report the presence of the Ceratophrys genus at the archaeological locality of San Antonio and at the Paso Alsina 1 archaeological site, situated at the lower basin of the Colorado river (Buenos Aires province, Argentina). The materials communicated here are assigned to the late Holocene and represent the southernmost evidence known for the genus at the Pampean-Patagonian transition, recorded more than 400 kilometers south of their present-day distribution. Additionally, we mention and discuss all the holocene localities where osseous elements referable to Ceratophrys were found. The corological variation proposed here for the genus Ceratophrys is coincident with paleoenvi-ronmental hypotheses that propose higher temperature and a possible elevated hydric availability rates for the late Holocene.
