Abstract
DEL CAMPO, Andrea and RUIZ, Soledad. Empowerment of Unionised Household Workers. Psykhe [online]. 2013, vol.22, n.1, pp.15-28. ISSN 0718-2228. http://dx.doi.org/10.7764/psykhe.22.1.635.
This paper reports the results of an exploratory study seeking to investigate if union participation has stimulated individual empowerment processes in the labor relationships of household workers. In order to achieve this, data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews with 10 members of the only household workers´ union in Santiago, Chile. The analysis was performed using open coding according to grounded theory. The results of this study show that -based on the interviewees´ viewpoints- unionisation contributes to labor empowerment if combined with other conditions, chiefly, the commitment of the worker to watching over her own rights and the existence of deeply-rooted, protective labor laws.
