This article presents the results on the investigation of the schooling processes of the Aymara population of northern Chile from a gender perspective and addresses the influence of formal schooling system in the socialization of the Aymara people of the altiplano since the arrival of the national school system in the area during the second half of the 20th century. We discuss the information about the elementary school curriculum in order to know and consider the role played by the school system in the changes of gender labour division among this population, based on interviews with women and men about their school experience as students and parents, with teachers, as educational agents, and through the content analysis of the most widely used textbooks.
