This paper analyzes how undergraduate students and professional academics express opinions and attitudes in their texts. This study is theoretically and methodologically based on the semantic system of Appraisal as presented by Martin and White (2005), in particular the systems of Attitude and Graduation. Here we focus on the role that Graduation resources play on the realization of evaluative meanings in academic discourse in Spanish. To this effect, thirty literary analysis essays were analyzed. Twenty essays were written by students of Spanish Literature at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. On a second stage of the study, ten essays written by academics and published in academic journals of the same discipline were also analyzed. Several aspects were considered, amongst them: the role of Graduation in building inscribed or invoked evaluation, the use of the Graduation subsystems of Force and Focus and their realizations at the lexicogrammatical level in Spanish. Results show some similarities between both groups of writers such as the prevalence of resources within the subsystem of Force and, especially, that of Intensification. Nevertheless, we could also identify significant differences between them, related both to the option of Graduation by Quantification and to the choices made for its realization.
