Resumen

SILVESTRI, Adriana. Formulating questions to assess reading comprehension: Applied research. Rev. signos [online]. 2006, vol.39, n.62, pp.493-510. ISSN 0718-0934.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-09342006000300008.

This paper describes adolescent students’ autonomous performance in solving comprehension problems by the strategic use of question asking.  To this purpose, an explanatory text comprehension text was applied, followed by a series of exercises that helped analyze metacomprehensive abilities at the base of question asking.  Among these abilities, the participants proved to be more competent in the identification and explanation of factors facilitating comprehension than in factors making it difficult.  A tenuous connection was detected between this competence and question asking.  Results show that most students have low ability or fail to recognize the strategic importance of question asking to solve comprehension difficulties or to gain further information on a particular subject. They also suggest a lack of systematic teaching that could allow students to ask productive questions.

Palabras clave : Reading comprehension; metacomprehension; secondary school; explanatory skills; question asking.
