This paper presents a study of the influence of heat interchanged with the environment in an exergetic process analysis. This type of study produces a highly powerful tool, although interpretation of the results may present difficulties due to restrictions involved with the definitions of different terms. The paper reveals these difficulties in the case of reversible work due to influence of the heat exchanged with the environment. For this, a mathematical expression is obtained for the reversible work in two scenarios; i) suppressing the irreversibilities and ii) compensating the alterations in heat exchanged with the reservoirs using reversible machines. The results obtained indicate that the reversible work (exergetic analysis) differs from that which is obtained when suppressing the irreversibilities (optimization process). It is concluded from these results that the restrictions to which the definition of reversible work is subjected may result in that the value does not reach the hypothetical ceiling attainable in the optimization of an energetic system
