This article analyzes the nature and characteristics of the rulings of constitutional courts in South America. Constitutional res judicata is examined in its absolute, relative and apparent forms. A typology of rulings is developed, according to the criterion of admission or dismissal of the constitutionality issue, or the partial unconstitutionality ruling, which raises the atypical ruling of interpretation according to the constitution. We also consider additive, exhortative, and prospective decisions, the rulings of substitution, and the rulings of unconstitutional omission by the legislator. Finally, the different effects of the said rulings are analyzed with respect to parties and time.
