This article examines the development of judicial review in the countries of South America, considering the cases of specialized constitutional courts as well as cases of non-specialized judicial review, and mixed cases. Having thus described the status of judicial review in the region, both substantive and formal criteria are deployed to identify those countries whose judicial review systems correspond to the notion of a constitutional court. Finally, an organizational and functional analysis of these courts is provided.
