The vertebral venous plexus in dogs is an extensive vascular network that extends along the entire length of the vertebral column. This venous system can be divided in three intercommunicating components; the internal vertebral venous plexus; the external vertebral venous plexus and the basivertebral veins. Because of the increasing clinical relevance of this plexus in veterinary as well as in human medicine, the purpose of this paper is to review the literature on the anatomy of the canine vertebral venous plexus and the main physiologic and clinical aspects related to it
