Resumen
SAAVEDRA GALLO, Gonzalo. IMAGINED FUTURES FOR ARTISANAL FISHING AND AND THE EXPANSION OF SALMON FARMING IN THE FAR SOUTH OF CHILE. Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2015, vol.47, n.3, pp.521-539. Epub 22-Ago-2015. ISSN 0717-7356. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562015005000031.
This article analyses the problematic relationship between the mega-industrial production of salmon in captivity and the artisanal non-industrialised fishing systems used in the far south of Chile, in the islands of western Patagonia. The discourse elaborated by those actors involved in fishing in this territory, in conversational situations designed as spaces of reflexive intersubjectivity between researchers and local actors, is contrasted with specific representations of the imagined future for artisanal fishing. The references that trigger this imagination are four scenarios which in this research are taken as starting points, and which express varied positions and attitudes regarding the dilemmas of modernisation in Chile’s far south. This approach allows observation of the localised, socio-cultural interstices in spaces where development creates tensions and conflicts, and also invites us to re-think the place and the "nature" of the political in a relational framework where companies, the State, NGOs and local communities congregate.
