This paper gives account of some of the results from an archaeological project that was carried out in Susques (Puna de Jujuy). Our objective is to study the establishment of the predominant strategy of pastoralism which arose at the beginning of camelid domestication. In this context, we present information related to the isolated interment of a human head, that to date, is considered the oldest evidence of human occupation in the area. In accordance with the associated context and the isotopic study of diet, this discovery represents the beginnings of camelid pastoralism. Therefore, its study should mark an important place in the long process of social and economic development (ca. 3000-2000 B.P.) in the Andean highlands
