This article is intended to examine the work done by Catholic institutions in relations to the development of the first housing solutions offered to the working class. My aim is to identify the main motivations of those who formed these institutions between the late XIX and early XX centuries. Moreover, I offer and analysis of the functioning of these institutions along with the design options adopted and the related urban and social problems generated in Santiago. On this vein, I claim that the work done by Chilean Social Catholicism post-Rerum Novarum (1891), triggered state involvement, expressed through the Law of Housing for Workers of 1906
