MERUANE, Jaime A et al. Experiences and results of researches on the northern freshwater prawn Cryphiops caementarius (Molina 1782) (Decapoda: Palaemonidae): Natural history and aquaculture. Gayana (Concepc.) [online]. 2006, vol.70, n.2, pp.280-292. ISSN 0717-652X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-65382006000200015.

Cryphiops caementarius (Molina 1782) (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) the northern freshwater prawn (Fig. 1) is the only species in the famliy represented in Chile. Its geographical distribution is confined to the rivers of the occidental coast of Peru and Chile from 10ºS to 32º 55´S. This freshwater prawn in Chile inhabits the rivers and ravines that mainly brought waters from the Andes mountains. The species was protected in Chile during a long time by a total interdiction. However, the clandestine exploitation with an excessive extraction produced a reduction of the population size of this prawn and the reduction of the size of the extracted animals. The damage caused on this resource encouraged the authorities to review the current regulations, proclaming a decree during 1996 with a new disposition that banned the extraction of this resource from December the 1st until April 30th each year. All these regulations increased the interest to know the life cycle of this species. Since the synoptic studies, several intents have been made in Peru and Chile, to study his biology, reproduction, bioecological conditions, habitat, population composition, migrations, larval development studies and some intents of aquaculture. All these studies were oriented to know and understand basic and technological aspects to establish artificial culture systems that allow the reduction of the extractive pressure over the resource and to replace it by an artificial juvenile production. This review consider most of the available information, wich will be summarized in one publication that includes those aspects that will allow to establish a solid basis to understand the species behaviour, in order to be able to reproduce artificially the species according to conservation and aquaculture purposes.
