The participation of the clergy during the Independence movement had significant effects, since several of them, whether Spanish, Criollo and peninsular people backed the revolution, while many others rejected it. In their speeches, proclamations and preaches, they broke with the Indies tradition and established a teleological justification to the autonomist, separatist and subsequent independence movement.
