This article is about the relationship between the birth of divorce as an institution in the Republican Rome and the appearance, for the husband, of the obligation of dowry restitution. The case of Spurio Carvilio Ruga is specially studied, whose divorce, according to tradition, was the first to be practiced in Romes history.
