GARCIA C, PATRICIA et al. RAPID DIAGNOSIS OF MUCORMYCOSIS WITH CALCOFLUOR WHITE STAIN: REPORT OF TWO CASES. Rev. chil. infectol. [online]. 2001, vol.18, n.4, pp.285-290. ISSN 0716-1018.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0716-10182001000400007.

Rapid diagnosis of mucormycosis is important for surgical control of infection. Diagnosis is made by the observation of fungi in tissue using direct examination or using standard staining methods like hematoxylin-eosin, peryodic acid stain or Gomori`s methenamine silver. Another useful method, of limited use in our country is calcofluor white stain. Calcofluor binds to quitin and cellulose of fungi. We describe two patients with clinical suspicion of mucormycosis. The diagnosis was made intraoperatively by the direct tissue examination using this stain. Fluorescence microscopy showed characteristic wide, non-septate hyphae of Mucorales. Rhizopus sp grew in culture, confirming inicial findings

Palabras clave : Mucormycosis; Calcofluor white stain; Diagnosis.
