CHAVEZ P, Ana et al. OSTEOARTICULAR INFECTION CAUSED BY Candida albicans. Rev. chil. infectol. [online]. 2000, vol.17, n.4, pp.340-343. ISSN 0716-1018.

The incidence of invasive Candida infections has greatly increased during the last decades due to the increase of the population at risk, because of their immunosuppresion and use of invasive diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures. Nevertheless the Candida osteoarticular infection secondary to bloodstream invasion is infrecuent. A case of a central venous catheter-associated nosocomial infection in a newborn infant with a congenital nephrourologic disease is presented. Multiple osteoarticular involvement was found as a result of candidemia. The patient was treated with amphotericin B followed by oral fluconazole, and also surgical drainage of the affected joints. The clinical outcome was favorable with complete anatomical and functional restoration after a two year follow up. Clinical features of Candida osteoarticular infection (common to other etiologies), laboratory diagnosis based on isolation of the yeast, histological findings and antifungal therapy are commented.
