VERTICAL TRANSMISSION OF HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS INFECTION: IMPACT OF PROTOCOL ACTG 076 IN CHILE. Rev. chil. infectol. [online]. 2000, vol.17, n.4, pp.297-301. AIDS epidemic continues spreading in Chile, with infection specially increasing among women in the last years and determining an increase in the number of exposed newborn infants to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. One of the strategies implemented for diminishing the frecuency of infection in infants is zidovudine treatment of mother-child unit according to the protocol ACTG 076 that demostrated an important reduction in vertical transmission. Since January 1995 this protocol was started in our country including till December 1998, 55.6% of HIV positive pregnant women detected. A reduction of transmission rate to 6.9% was obtained. These results make evident the necessity of introducing the routine screening of HIV infection in all pregnant women in order to offer opportune treatment to mother child unit.
