LAGOMARSINO F, Edda. Children hypertension, a new insight. Responsibility of the pediatrician. Rev. chil. pediatr. [online]. 1998, vol.69, n.5, pp.227-235. ISSN 0370-4106.

Recent research seems to indicate that the origin of arterial hypertension (AHT) in the could be located in childhoad. As AHT is a serious public hearth problem, it stands to reason that preventive action be taken during infancy.  Blood pressure (BP) Must be measured once a year, as the peciatriciants main obligation, BP must be measured under basal conditions one readings correctly assessed. Once AHT is detected, the whole family group must understand the need ;or a change in live style: weight reduction in the obese, how salt intake, low saturated fats in the Die, promotion of regular exercise. The hypertensive child should be referred to a nephrclogist., we will seek secondary causes, and prescribe surgical correction or pharmacological management. The pediatrician has an even greater responsabilify towards the normotensive population, which far outnumbers that with elevated BP. He should look for risk factors such as low birth weight, placental/broth weight disparity, insulin resistance, family history of AHT or cardiovascular diseases. Preventive action taken in this segment of the population is most likely to bring about significant changes :n the morbidity and mortality profile of hypertension in the occult.
