The effect of cutting frequency and phenological stage at cutting on production and quality of seeds was studied on Bromus berteroanus Colla, Hordeum murinum L., Avena barbata Pott ex Link, and Vulpia myuros (L.) C.C. Gmel. The trials were held in a greenhouse under controlled conditions and without water restriction. The phenological stages of the cutting for each species were: first pair of leaves, beginning of tillering, and beginning of floral stem elongation. Frequency included cuts each time the plant produced the first pair of leaves (n=3), and cuts at the beginning of tillering (n=2). The quality of seeds (germination, viability, and vigor), and number of clusters of fruit and seeds were evaluated. Production of fruit and seeds in the four species decreased significantly (P<0.01) with cuts during the vegetative phase, excepting V. myuros, whose greatest decrease (P<0.01) occurred with cuts at the beginning of the elongation of the floral stem. Seed quality was affected variably, as well the weight of 100 seeds decreased (P<0.01) in three species, excepting A. barbata; viability showed little decrease, but increased in V. myuros (P<0.01). Germination capacity was not affected negatively, and improved in A. barbata and V. myuros.
