Through bio-medical and political-economy multidisciplinary analysis of urban air contamination and related ill-health, the article shows that contemporary ecological degradation and environmental illness represent local phenomena that have globalised as these appear in developed and developing economies. These changes are associated to neo-liberal growth activities which have encouraged the emergence of modern environmental pollution. Analysis of epidemiological studies reveal the globalisation of the phenomenon in cities around the world and particular emphasis is given to cities in Europe, USA and South America
