Theology in the academy is developed according to technical criteria that give it scientific status. The aim of this study is to explore the opportunities and challenges that this presents for theological science. On the one hand, there is the need to reconfigure the epistemic construct of theology, and, on the other, the importance of maintaining the originality and specificity of faith as a field of knowledge. The research method is the analysis of how theology in the academy maintains or weakens such elements as faith, the affirmation of the transcendent, ecclesiality, engagement in the world, the people as theological subject, and praxis. The conclusion is that only by ensuring these elements can theology in the academy assert itself as such among the other sciences, constituting itself as a field of knowledge applicable to the theoretical and practical situations of humanity.
