Juan de Éfeso compuso en siríaco su Historia eclesiástica en la década del 590 en los momentos finales de su exilio en Constantinopla. Si bien la elección de esta lengua nos revela un público esencialmente provincial, probablemente los monjes de los monasterios de Alta mesopotamia, la lógica que regía a la Historia eclesiástica no era ni regional ni étnica, por el contrario, el autor incorporó su narrativa en el marco del Imperio cristiano. La Historia eclesiástica comprendía una historia universal desde Julio César hasta Mauricio, y estaba dividida en tres partes de las cuales sólo se conserva parcialmente la tercera. La primera parte (completamente perdida) era una breve crónica de los emperadores romanos desde finales del siglo I a.C. hasta el segundo concilio de Éfeso. La segunda parte comprendía el período 451-571 y se conservan en las obras de historiadores posteriores. Los fragmentos de esta segunda parte fueron publicados por Chabot, J.B. (ed.) Incerti autoris.
