BASIC AND APPLIED SCIENCE OF SYNTHETIC
AZAMACROCYCLES.

The Field of synthetic macrocycles is very wide and covers several basic and applied subjects of interest for chemists, biologists, engineers and many others. On the other hand, this field is widely developed an it has been an important source of applied science to problem related to several disciplines during the last forty years.

The study of macrocycles in wide scale started in the early sixties as an academic field of interest. So, synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds with macrocycles ligands have been done in the last 20 years. Such studies have show that the chemical properties of the compounds depended on the nature of the ligands. For example, the effect of the macrocyclic ligand on the electronic transitions and the redox potentials on several metais have been widely show. Additionally, the degree of insaturation and the size of the macrocycle have a pronounced effect on the reactivity and stability of the oxidation states of the transition metal vow. For example, the electrochemical reactivity of these complexes can be controlled, in principle, by appropriate structural changes on the ligands and solvents.

The field of synthetic macrocycles increases its importance since the early seventies due to the inmerse variety of synthetic procedures and wide possibilities of application in different fields of thecnological importance. Also, important magazines such as Phthalocyanines and Conferences and International Symposia in macrocyclic chemistry are covering nowadays the information in this subject.

In recent years there has been a lot of interest in the field of azamacrocyclic complexes because of their resemblance with naturally occurring biological systems. Azamacrocycles have strong tendency to form stables complexes with transition metais. The synthesis of azamacrocycles complexes and its potential applications in areas such electrocatalysis and electrochemical corrosion is nowadays a theme of great interest.

Transition metal complexes with azamacrocycles ligand such as phtalocyanines and porphirines derivatives among others has been studied and used for more than two decades as catalyst (homo- and heterogeneous) in several chemical interesting reactions and technological procedures.

The field has recently been extended to the study of novel subjects such as molecular sensors in biological systems, supramolecular chemistry, nanotubes, lanthanide complexation and complexes "molecular machines".
