Resumen

PARRAGUEZ, Isidro. ALEJANDRO LISPCHUTZ AND THE INSTITUTO INDGENISTA INTERAMERICANO. A FIRST DECADE OF RELATIONS (1940-1950). Diálogo Andino [online]. 2017, n.52, pp.15-25. ISSN 0719-2681.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0719-26812017000100015.

In this article we present a reading of the figure of Alejandro Lipschutz and his relevance in the emergence and development of institutionalized indigenismo in Latin America (1940-1950). This type of indigenismo crystalizes in institutions such as the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano, a panamerican organization that strives to ensure the advancement of indigenous groups by means of monitoring state policies and training “expert ” technicians in indigenous topics. Within this field, which originated in the 40’s, rose from Chile the highly praised intellectual figure of Alejandro Lipschutz. With a background in medicine, he was to become one of the prime exponents and advocates of indigenismo in our country. His indigenist theory would deeply mark the (ever-scarce) relation between Chile, the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano and the field of institutionalized indigenismo that he brought about. Shedding light on these relationships allows us to reflect upon the way in which the field of indigenismo was constructed, and upon the nature of the forces and ideas that inspired it, the proposals it has offered, and the relation the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano holds with Chile.
