FIORE, Danae. VISUAL MATERIALITY AND ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE IMAGE: CONCEPTUAL PERSPECTIVES AND METHODOLOGICAL PROPOSALS FROM SOUTHERN SOUTH AMERICA. Bol. Mus. Chil. Arte Precolomb. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.2, pp. 101-119. ISSN 0718-6894. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-68942011000200008.
This paper focuses on the materiality of visual productions and their archaeological analysis by several South American authors. To this end, two complementary sections are ]presented. Thefirst section contains a systematic review of six papers related to this topic, which are ]published in this issue. The review includes references as well as reflections on topics, materials, methods, analytical units, formal properties and concepts used in the papers. The second section proposes several criteria relevant to the study of the materiality of images, including aspects related to the visual composition of images; the representation of referents; scales and analytical units; technology and economy; context, and quantitative data. Thus, this paper focuses on the present-day experience of decoding the marks left by human agents through the practices of looking at and creating art in the past.
