RAIMANN LA-MANNA, Félix A. Gastric bypass for the treatment of morbid obesity. Rev Chil Cir [online]. 2006, vol.58, n.4, pp. 270-275. ISSN 0718-4026. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-40262006000400007.
Background: Gastric bypass is being increasingly used for the treatment of morbid obesity. Aim: To report a personal experience with the first 100 gastric bypass operations. Material and methods: Prospective study of the first 100 patients (age range 16-61 years, 66 females) subjected to open gastric bypass using staples, by the author. Eighty patients were followed for a mean period of 34 months (range 7-93). Results: Two patients had early complications (one had a dehiscence of the gastrojejunal anastomosis and one an infection of the surgical wound). Nine percent of patients had late complications. Of these, three had a stenosis of the gastrojejunal anastomosis that was corrected endoscopically and three had an ulcer of the anastomotic orifice, that received medical treatment. No patient died. In 87% of those patients that were followed, there was a 50% reduction of initial overweight during the first postoperative year. Conclusions: The results in these patients, reaffirm the good results and the low rate of complications of gastric bypass for the treatment of morbid obesity
