Background: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) is one of the alternatives of choice in the surgical treatment of morbid obesity. Aim: To assess the rate of postoperative complications after RYGBP at our institution. Material and methods: Information was obtained from the prospective database of all patients who underwent laparoscopic RYGBP from August of 2001 to March of 2005. Results: In the study period, 641 patients (aged 37 ± 11 years, 76% women) underwent RYGBP. Mean preoperative body mass index (BMI) was 42 ± 15 (Kg/m2). Hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia were present in 30, 12 and 48% of patients, respectively. In 10 patients (1.6%) conversion to open surgery was needed. The mean operative time was 118 ± 49 minutes and hospital stay was 4 ± 3 days. Postoperative complications were observed in 57 patients (8,9%). In 16 of these (2.5%) reoperation was required. There were no deaths. Conclusions: Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is a good alternative for the surgical treatment of morbid obesity
