The high consumption of firewood has generated serious air pollution problems, and is considered to be an issue of national and local importance. The burning of firewood in the residences of cities in southern Chile has a strong cultural and territorial bias; Osorno is one of the cities with the highest levels of pollution and in 2012 was declared a saturated zone. The objectives of this study are: (1) to investígate the characteristics of residential consumption in sectors of the city, (2) to estímate the factors that impact on a high consumption of firewood, and (3) to assess the impact of variables on residential demand for wood. To this end, surveys are conducted on private homes, using a cluster sampling design, identifying as such various sectors of the city. The results indicate that, contrary to expectations, the consumption of firewood is determined positively by the per capita income of the household, although there are differences according to geographic sector; thus, consumption is generally concentrated in the middle socio-economic groups, although in the West sector the families of higher income groups are an additional group to consider; however the willingness to pay for certified firewood is low and other types of fuel are more competitive; paraffin is the closest substitute, and under current conditions, it is the variable that most affects a low consumption; It is estimated that the amount of firewood consumed depends positively on the number of windows and the materiality of the house, and negatively on the number of floors. Finally, some public policy proposals are outlined, in order to discourage the consumption of uncertified firewood, to motivate construction in high ground, the technological development of heating devices based on other fuels, to improve the materiality of dwellings and to focus the efforts spatially.
