The nineteenth century houses conjugated material properties inherited from the colony, and also expressed the cultural changes that occurred from the revolution of 1810, and the begining of the modern world at the end of the century. The houses were the product of the ways of living, closely related to the customs, the available material and financial resources, next to technical building knowledge acquired so far. The resulting material characteristics of this relationship of factors that combined in the home showed similarities and differences, both in Chile and in the region of Cuyo in Argentina. In this paper we propose to undertake an architectural history on the physical characteristics of the nineteenth century homes in Santiago de Chile and the Cuyo Region of Argentina in close relation to the lifestyles and customs, in order to understand its meaning immersed in a contextual framework for the period covering the two countries.
