In this article three passages of the work by the Chilean poet Enrique Lihn (1929-1988) are studied in relation to the issue of cultural identity. First, a trip to Europe in Poesía de paso (1966) confronts the eurocentric education of the subject and the metropolitan cultural legacy revealing the lack of a Latin-American cultural identity. Second, in the poem "Varadero de Rubén Darío" of Escrito en Cuba (1969) Lihn continues this analytical stance by updating and repeating the criticism of "mental galicism" that were done to Rubén Darío. Finally, the poem/speech "Lihn y Pompier" (1977) depart from all the previous standpoints. Here the writer no longer considers in a detached position to make a personal or social criticism, but rather decides to incarnate them in a parodic fashion with the figure of the "meteco" and the character Gerardo de Pompier.
