This article examines de process by which, in recent years, Latin American women have seen their chances to enter the sphere of formalised political relationships increased. The study seeks to evaluate the impact of measures of affirmative action -also known as "positive discrimination"- on the transformations (or lack of) that have been verified in this sphere, focusing on three countries: Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The experience of affirmative action in the first two cases is examined with the purpose of establishing key variables that would make possible to asses the potential impact of a quota law in Chile, particularly in the domain of political representation and, within it, Legislative bodies at the national level
