Particular features in Cuyo wine growing crises, have not always been properly evaluated, because they imply differing facts within the long term processes. This is the case of the Phylloxera (Philloxera vastatrix) disease that devastated San Juan between 1928 and 1940, destroying 17% of the vine plantations in the province, with major effects in the heart of the productive area. In spite of its damage for almost a decade, several studies of viticulture crises, haven't taken proper notice of Phyloxera, probably because it remained hidden in the shade of the national policies established by the Junta Reguladora de Vinos -Wine Regulation Board-. It is our purpose in this article, to review this critical point, examine the reliability of the sources and trace the origins of the phylloxeric disease, the area of impact and consequences of the plague
