The article describes the relation  between politics and culture in Chile, during the last three decades. It discusses -with historical perspective- the main features of culture during the Pinochet regime (1973-1989) and the first three governments of the Concertación (1990-2005). It examines achievements  and  challenges that still need to be dealt, in terms of public policies in the context of  a new cultural and communicative  scene
